8/22 - 8/25

Objectives: take notes on "From Legend to History," learn TRI summary, scan poem
Activities: Note-taking and summary; group work
HWK: Scan (don't read) "The Seafarer"; write down a line and explain in three sentences why it is meaningful to you

Getting through the opening material was a little grueling. I would rather assign groups to do it than having everyone read the entire selection, though. It would be nice if we had time to watch the Monty Python movie (MP and the Holy Grail)--I wonder how many have seen it.

Will need to do TRI on Wednesday in 3W. Please note that the key to the outline is on the website!

8/20 - 8/21

Objectives: Learn class expectations; take pre-test; read library book
Activities: Rubric; begin unit 1; begin reading project
HWK: write vocab words and definitions for "The Seafarer" (43)

I think we're going to be able to do group work this year in both classes. That would be great. I'm eager to get to "The Seafarer," which I found intimidating the first time I read it, but have begun to like.

8/18 - 8/19

Objectives: Learn class procedures; check out library books
Activities: Define and practice skills; go to the library
HWK: none!

The new reading program is challenging, but I was really pleased: everyone present managed to find a book. Library trips went well. Please remember to bring your books to class in case you finish other work.

8/13 - 8/15

Objectives: work on note-taking and organizational strategies; understanding class expectations
Activities: take notes on the rubric; practice skills from the rubric
HWK: none!

It seemed like a lot of people are in the same groups as last year: many of last year's 1B students are together and so are 4W students. I'm eager to move through the rubric and get to "The Seafarer," a poem about an Anglo-Saxon sailor. It's about life on the sea and loneliness. I really enjoyed the team competition in 4B.
